Rise Justice Labs Announces 2020 Cohort

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rise Justice Labs, the world's first civil rights accelerator, announced the 2020 program cohort participants. Through a highly competitive selection process, the following teams were selected to join: Breaking Code Silence, The Every Voice Coalition, and the Tennessee Alliance for Black Lawyers.

Breaking Code Silence aims to put an end to institutional child abuse within the troubled teen industry. The Every Voice Coalition empowers survivors of sexual violence and students to write, file, and fight for legislation that codifies institutional accountability and support measures in all college communities. The Tennessee Alliance for Black Lawyers advances the common professional interests of Tennessee's African American bar and advocates for legislation including criminal justice reform through changing probation policies and laws and voting rights for formerly incarcerated individuals.

Congratulations to the incoming cohort members! Bella Fong, Caroline Lorson, Chelsea Filer, Chelsea Maldonado, Chicoya Gallman, Emily Carter, Jeff Walker, Jen Robison, Jenna Bulis, Katherine McNamara, Kimberly Harris-Dean, Lily James, Nora Gallo, Rebecca Mellinger, Paris Hilton, Simone Marshall Hayes, and Trey Reliford.

“The people who have the solutions to the world’s most pressing problems are those who live that problem everyday. Too often underrepresented groups are left out of the policy conversations that impact their lives. We are thrilled to welcome the next class of Rise’s incredible changemakers to pen their own rights into existence.” said Amanda Nguyen, Rise Founder and CEO.

“We are honored to work with this group of talented changemakers, and to see what they continue to accomplish!” said Caitlin Ryan, Rise Justice Labs Accelerator Director.

The Rise Justice Lab accelerator’s ultimate goal is to help everyday people pass their first law. To do this, we have compressed several years’ worth of learning into a 3-month accelerator program to support new changemakers as they research and draft a bill, craft their story to make the case for change, connect with lawmakers and other key stakeholders, and construct a community around them as they build broad support for their legislation. We deliver an intensive 12-week training program that includes seed funding, skills workshops, 1:1 coaching, guest lectures, access to professional services and a network of Congressional and State legislators.
